Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-CD3) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) led a news conference at the Capitol today on the future of immigration reform in the House of Representatives. Grijalva emphasized that the definition of "border security" should be expanded to include the humanitarian aspects of life along the border and that we should ensure that monies spent include funds for "search and rescue, how to educate and prevent those deaths, targeting human trafficking". (Grijalva noted that 2,700 lives have been lost along the portion of the Arizona-Mexico border that is part of his current Congressional District during the past 10 years.)
"The definition of border security has been hijacked to mean how many, what armaments, what technology. The Border Caucus feels that the definition for the borderlands of security is expansive and includes economics, it includes the humanitarian support."
