Arizona Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Senate President Harry Reid (D-NV) are friends who spar pretty continuously in (and out of) the Senate Chamber. Tomorrow, they are teaming up in the Capitol to support a study of the effects of boxing and MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting on the fighters' brain health.
The Professional Fighter Brain Health Study has been underway since 2011, by the Cleveland Clinic's Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. It examines the cumulative effects of repetitive concussive and subconcussive injuries to the brain in a group of professional combatants, boxing and mixed martial arts.
McCain and Reid have long been outspoken - together - about the need for regulation in the sport
of boxing, and both men were amateur boxers in their younger years.
